The origin of the tomato

The tomato originally comes from South America and was cultivated by the Aztecs centuries ago. The Spanish explorers brought them to Europe in the 16th century and from there they spread around the world. Today, it is one of the most widely cultivated vegetables in the world and an integral part of many cuisines. Botanically, the tomato belongs to the nightshade family and is therefore closely related to potatoes, eggplants and peppers.

The variety of tomatoes is impressive: there are over 10,000 varieties worldwide, which differ in shape, color and taste. From small, sweet cherry tomatoes to large, fleshy oxheart tomatoes, there is a suitable variety for every use. Tomatoes consist of around 95% water, which makes them a low-calorie and refreshing food. They are also rich in vitamins and contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that can provide health benefits.

Cultivation, fertilization and care

Tomatoes are easy to grow in your own garden or on the balcony.

  • Sowing: The seeds should be pre-germinated indoors or in a greenhouse from February or March. After the Ice Saints, the young plants can be planted outdoors. Sowing in special seed trays with fine soil improves germination.
  • Location: Tomatoes love sunny, sheltered spots with well-drained soil. Raised beds or large planters are ideal for cultivation. Regular loosening of the soil promotes root development.
  • Fertilization: A regular supply of nutrients is important. Organic fertilizer or special tomato fertilizer ensures strong plants and aromatic fruit. Compost or nettle manure can also be used as natural sources of nutrients.

  • Watering: Even watering is essential to avoid cracks in the fruit. Waterlogging should be avoided. It is best to water directly at the root in the morning or evening to prevent fungal infestation.

  • Care: Regular pruning (removal of side shoots) promotes fruit formation and improves the harvest. A trellis or tomato poles help to support the plants and protect them from wind breakage.

  • Pest control: Beneficial insects such as ladybugs or a mixture of water and soft soap can be used against aphids and other pests. A mixed culture with herbs such as basil or marigolds helps as a preventative measure.
